UNIQUE GIFTS FOR THE HOUSE-BOUND

Sometimes leaves are the perfect gift.

A friend Fed Exed a box full of colorful autumn leaves to his Yankee girlfriend when she was living in Florida and missed the season changes. This morning I was on my way to check in on a friend who is house-bound, admiring the lovely leaves scattered across the road along the way. I couldn’t resist picking up an extra large sycamore leaf.

It was shaped like a bowl so I filled it up with a collection of many colored leaves to take to my friend.

She happily examined each one..starting with the red, star-shaped sweet gum leaf!

Then she told me a story about how sweet gum wood is soft and used to be made into ice cream spoons in Charles County, MD  until the manufacturing moved to Japan. I don’t remember the last time I ate ice cream with one of those funny flat little spoons! Do you?

  1. Yes. We used them to eat “Dixie Cups”, orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream in a round waxed cardboard container with a flat top. The wooden spoons gave your mouth a funny feeling,
