Sometimes leaves are the perfect gift.
A friend Fed Exed a box full of colorful autumn leaves to his Yankee girlfriend when she was living in Florida and missed the season changes. This morning I was on my way to check in on a friend who is house-bound, admiring the lovely leaves scattered across the road along the way. I couldn’t resist picking up an extra large sycamore leaf.
It was shaped like a bowl so I filled it up with a collection of many colored leaves to take to my friend.
She happily examined each one..starting with the red, star-shaped sweet gum leaf!
Then she told me a story about how sweet gum wood is soft and used to be made into ice cream spoons in Charles County, MD until the manufacturing moved to Japan. I don’t remember the last time I ate ice cream with one of those funny flat little spoons! Do you?
