Eagle on ice!
Best time to see eagles is when the Potomac River is frozen. I think this one is a 4-year-old. Head and tail not totally white yet. We counted 12 on the ice 1/2/18, 8 adults and 4 juveniles/immature. They gather to fish where there is a break in the ice.

Low tide in the pond is paradise for herring gulls!
Low tide sneaks up on the little fish that normally enjoy our pond, leaving them suddenly trapped and easy prey for the hungry herring gulls who descend like a snowstorm.

In my search for flowers blooming in southern Maryland in December, I was greeted by a sunny, very short-stemmed dandelion! The pond is frozen but this flower seems perfectly happy. I wish my camellias looked as happy as this dandelion. How far North do they bloom in December?

Rosemary for remembrance
Add rosemary to the list of flowers still in bloom after several hard frosts in December in southern MD. Guess I need to look more carefully. Wish I could pass along the aroma. Do you cook with fresh rosemary?
Lumberjack’s Toilet Paper still blooming in southern MD!
I now have a bouquet of Lumberjack’s Toilet Paper, aka Common Mullein, in my kitchen in December! Hard to believe it is still blooming here in southern Maryland. We’ve had several frosts.
